Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a fraternity or a sorority?
A: A fraternity is a group of men or women bound together by friendship, brotherhood or sisterhood, and common goals and aspirations. Women's fraternities are most often referred to as sororities. The members that form the fraternity share their friendship, efforts and knowledge. Together these members learn and grow and make the fraternity/sorority strong. Their common experience can build ties that last a lifetime.

Though there are many different fraternities and sororities, they all share common founding principles that are of interest to any college man or woman. Fraternities endeavor to enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal, and social development. The ideals of lifelong friendship, sound education, campus and community service, and social interaction are what fraternity/sorority members strive to live by every day.

Q: Don't fraternities/sororities take up a lot of time?
A: Fraternity/sorority membership requires anywhere from 2 to 8 hours a week. Whether it is planning an event, a community service project, or regular weekly meetings, fraternity members have learned to manage their time wisely with other commitments like homework, boyfriends/girlfriends, and a job.

Q: Aren't fraternities/sororities expensive?
A: Joining a fraternity or sorority does carry a financial commitment. Each chapter is self-supporting with revenue coming from dues paying members. When students join a fraternity or sorority, they agree to pay dues and fees while enrolled at Arkansas Tech in order to maintain membership. While membership is affordable, some chapters are able to make accommodations for special circumstances, but students should discuss the financial obligations with you before they join.

Q: What is Recruitment?
A: Recruitment - which used to be referred to as "Rush" - is the time when the fraternities and sororities seek new members to join. It is a time when students on campus have an opportunity to visit each fraternity/sorority and compare what each has to offer so that he/she may chose the best one for him/her to join.

Q: If I take part in Recruitment, do I have to join a fraternity or sorority?
A: No. Recruitment is a time to see what fraternity or sorority life can offer you. Attending Recruitment functions or registering for Recruitment information does not commit you to joining a fraternity or sorority.

Q: Does being a member of a Greek-letter organization have benefits after graduation?
A: Absolutely. Fraternity & Sorority membership is a lifelong commitment. Once you are an initiated member, you remain a member for life. As such, each national organization has an extensive alumni network. As you know, in today's job market, it is not only important what you know, but who you know. Being a fraternity or sorority member means having an immediate connection with thousands of other members. There are many successful fraternity and sorority alumni all over the country who are always looking to hire the best and the brightest that our community has to offer. In addition, there are alumni groups or graduate chapters that operate in most cities and metropolitan areas across the country. If you find yourself in a new city, you can start your networking with your brothers or sisters in the local alumni group.

Q: I'm interested, but I'm still not sure.
A: That's what Recruitment is about! It's a time for you to see if joining a fraternity or sorority is right for you.

The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life is here to answer questions about fraternities and sororities without trying to influence you to join any particular chapter.
